(Griffith, Indiana)—Lake Area United Way launches the Lake Area COVID-19 Community Economic Relief Fund to raise financial resources to support the immediate and emerging needs of workers who are losing their income and are unable to pay their bills related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our focus is helping Lake County families access their basic necessities and supporting working families who are falling into the gap- making too much money to qualify for services but not making enough to make ends meet,” says Lisa Daugherty, President and CEO of Lake Area United Way. “In the coming days, not knowing how business closures will impact take-home pay of employees, we expect to see a significant increase in Lake County families requiring access to supports such as rent or mortgage assistance, utility assistance, and even childcare services.”
In addition to the $500,000 Lake Area United Way granted to local agency partners around basic needs this week, the Lake Area COVID-19 Community Economic Relief Fund will support nonprofit partners serving the increasing number of families with emerging needs.
Working with the United for Families Network, their coalition of agency partners, Lake Area United Way is identifying immediate needs and working to make funding and resources available to providers serving families in Lake County. Their web-based, shared case management system, Charity Tracker, is helping agencies electronically refer families to other agencies seamlessly, minimizing person-to-person contact.
With the state of Ohio reporting an additional 47,000 unemployment claims in just one week’s time since businesses were ordered to close or restrict their services, it is only a matter of time before the state of Indiana and Lake County residents feel the impact of this pandemic.
“Right now, we are calling on our community and our corporate partners to come together and support struggling families. This pandemic is a health crisis, but it is an economic crisis as well, and we intend to be here to support those being affected,” says Daugherty.
