COVID-19 Relief Initiative Coming to Lake Area United Way
Lake Area United Way is pleased to announce that it has been approved to receive a $3 million COVID-19 Economic Relief Initiative Grant, made possible through a partnership between Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Indiana United Ways, the state professional association of which Lake Area United Way is a member. These special funds will be used to boost the efforts of selected area human and social service nonprofits on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Lake Area United Way has been a key convener and coordinator of our community’s response to meet human needs for decades. Even before this crisis, we knew that almost one in four families in Lake and Newton Counties were not able to make ends meet - despite working. Without a robust local nonprofit safety net, those needs are bound to become even more dire. Thanks to generous support from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., we are now more strongly positioned to help our community’s nonprofits deal with the immediate impacts of Covid-19,” said Chris White, Board Chair for Lake Area United Way.
The COVID-19 Economic Relief Initiative Grant calls for United Ways that receive funding to leverage partnerships and relationships to better meet Covid-related essential and basic needs, which could include safe, emergency childcare, and to address other Covid-19 critical issues as they emerge. Specifically, Lake Area United Way plans to address the urgent basic needs of those displaced workers whose income has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in the near term, as well as support recovery and community development phases to create efficiency in the system that families need to navigate to access training and/or better paying jobs. Lake Area United Way will begin accepting funding requests from area human and social service nonprofits in good standing beginning April 24, 2020. Interested organizations should consult Lake Area United Way’s website at lauw.org for guidance on funding intent and application instructions.
Lake Area United Way mobilizes the caring power of the community to help struggling, working families attain financial stability by (1) helping people access livable wage jobs, (2) supporting quality, affordable child care strategies that support working parents, and (3) funding providers who offer basic needs support for vulnerable, working families.
