Amy W. Han, PhD, MPH, is Director of Clinical Education and Student Affairs, Co-Director of the Urban Medicine Program, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine–Northwest. She has more than 20 years of experience in academic medicine and public health, with expertise in medical education, population health, health equity research, and community-based participatory research. She has been a member of the IUSM faculty since 2007 and has played a significant role in expanding medical education and clinical training opportunities in Northwest Indiana. In 2009, she helped build the school’s third- and fourth-year clinical curriculum, making IUSM-Northwest the first regional campus in the system to offer a full four-year medical education. In 2021, she created IUSM’s first Scholarly Concentration in Urban Medicine and Healthcare Disparities and the Urban Medicine Program Track.
Dr. Han’s work is strongly rooted in the health and well-being of communities across Northwest Indiana. She has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on more than $3.2 million in funded projects through the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, and Indiana Department of Health, including initiatives focused on health screenings, referrals, and street medicine in Lake County. She also leads community health screening and prevention programs and mentors medical students conducting research in partnership with local hospitals and community organizations. Her academic and community work focuses on understanding and addressing disparities in access to care, prevention, and health outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.
Beyond her work in medicine and education, Dr. Han has extensive experience in nonprofit and civic leadership. She currently serves on the boards of United Way of Northwest Indiana, Powers Health Community Hospital, Peoples Bank/Finward, Regional Care Group, and Theater at the Center, where she serves as Board President. She previously served on the boards of Legacy Foundation and South Shore Arts and has been Co-Executive Director of the Asian American Medical Association since 2003. She also contributes her expertise to several health equity and community health advisory boards, including those connected to the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Indiana Cancer Consortium.
Dr. Han has lived and worked in Northwest Indiana for most of her career and is committed to strengthening the communities she calls home. Through her service with United Way of Northwest Indiana, she brings expertise in population health, health equity, needs assessment, program design and evaluation, grant development, and nonprofit governance. She is particularly passionate about using local data and community partnerships to help address the interconnected challenges affecting health, education, and financial stability. For Dr. Han, serving United Way is both a professional commitment and a personal one. Her family lives here, her students train here, and she is dedicated to helping create a healthier Northwest Indiana for the next generation.
